Scarcity of economic data in literature signals less commercialization

The fact that French and English literature is far richer in income and price data than Russian, African, or Asian literature implies that the level of commercialization and capitalism was much greater in 19th-century Europe than in more agricultural societies, so the presence or absence of economic detail in fiction is itself an indicator of a society's commercialization.
