How Civilizations Collapse Themselves – Spengler's Philosophy of Decline How do civilizations collapse—not from invasion, but from within? This video explores Oswald Spengler’s philosophy of civilizational decline, revealing why societies lose meaning, why citizens stop participating, and why cultures eventually commit a slow form of suicide. From China’s “lying flat” movement to Western burnout, quiet quitting, collapsing birth rates, and the rise of Caesar-like leaders, this video explains the psychology behind decline, including learned helplessness, convenience addiction, and the rise of Nietzsche’s “Last Men.” Spengler believed civilizations behave like living organisms—born, growing, peaking, and then dying through spiritual exhaustion. This video breaks down: ✔ The life-cycle of cultures ✔ Why creativity turns into bureaucracy ✔ Why meaning evaporates in late-stage societies ✔ Why citizens voluntarily give up power ✔ Why charismatic strongmen rise during decline ✔ Why abundance destroys civilizations more effectively than poverty ✔ The spiritual collapse that precedes political collapse This is not just philosophy—it's a mirror. The collapse happening around us starts inside us: in our choices, our attention, and our surrender to comfort. If Spengler is right, we can't stop winter—but we can choose who we become during it. In this episode of the Macroscopic Podcast, Alexej Jordanov speaks with Alasdair Macleod about China’s new gold clearing system in Hong Kong, the shift of physical gold and silver from West to East, and why Beijing may be preparing for a future without the U.S. dollar. Macleod explains why China is accumulating gold, silver, copper and other strategic commodities, how the Shanghai Gold Exchange and new vaulting infrastructure could support a yuan-gold settlement system, and why he believes Western paper gold markets like COMEX and London are vulnerable as physical demand moves east. The conversation also covers the possibility of Russia putting the ruble on a gold standard, the future of the dollar, the silver squeeze, China’s role in global commodity markets, and what investors should consider when storing physical gold and silver outside the banking system. ›› Alasdair Macleod: - Substack: https://www.macleodfinance.com/ - X: https://x.com/MacleodFinance 📲 Download the GoldRepublic app: - Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goldrepublic - Apple Store: https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/goldrepublic/id475643876 🟠 Buy and store physical allocated gold, silver and platinum. 👉 Open an account: https://bit.ly/38stf7p ⚠️ DISCLAIMER ⚠️ The views and opinions expressed in this program are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of any entities they represent. Ukrainian drone strikes have knocked out roughly a third of Russia's oil refining capacity, forcing an energy superpower to ration petrol at home and import gasoline from India — while Crimea sits under a state of emergency with the air-raid sirens switched off so the tourists aren't disturbed. In this video we look at what the numbers actually say: a contracting economy despite record military spending, a National Wealth Fund down from 6.5% of GDP to 1.8%, a first-quarter budget deficit that blew through the entire year's target in ninety days, and a banking system quietly commandeered to keep the tank factories running. We look at how China has turned the "no limits" partnership into a very one-sided arrangement, why Europe's largest rearmament since the Cold War sent defence stocks down, whether Europe actually needs expensive American fighter jets or is simply paying tribute to Washington — and what the Russian endgame realistically looks like, according to a Russian billionaire who is not a dissident. Featuring the Kiel Institute's "Endgame" report, Tucker Carlson's demon, and the parade Vladimir Putin had to get Zelensky's permission to hold. Human domination relies on large-scale cooperation among strangers, which is sustained by bureaucratic systems – such as laws, finance, religion – designed to build trust. Since AIs are ‘native bureaucrats’, they can effortlessly remember all laws, transactions, and scriptures far better than any human. This leaves AI uniquely placed to take over critical processes, such as granting bank loans, deciding university admissions, determining prison sentences, and executing military strikes. One insight changed everything... intelligence can emerge from pattern prediction. This is a capstone video featuring key insights from the entire AI series. Thanks to Jane Street for sponsoring this video. If you want to learn more about their work in ML and open roles, visit their website: jane-st.co/AoP-ML From the first neural networks built with matchboxes and beads to today's AI systems that can reason, create, and understand language, this video reveals how machines learned to think by copying nature's three-layered approach to learning. We'll journey through the key breakthroughs - from simple visual pattern recognition to game-playing AIs that developed "alien" strategies, and finally to language models that can imagine anything we can describe. Along the way, we'll discover how researchers unlocked each layer of intelligence: evolutionary learning that keeps what works, reinforcement learning that adapts within a lifetime, and finally, language learning that allows knowledge to be shared across minds. This is the story of how pattern prediction became pattern generation, and how machines learned to think... one layer at a time. In his latest memo, Howard Marks discusses the implications of governmental intervention in economies. Considering examples such as rent control, fire insurance, and tariffs, he emphasizes that while free markets don’t produce perfect solutions, efforts to control them often make things much worse. He argues that when allowed to function, the laws of economics create prosperity through incentivizing innovation and productivity. He also touches on the U.S. fiscal deficit, questioning how much longer the government can continue spending more than it takes in. What role does artificial intelligence play in human purpose and meaning? To address this question, Dr. Aaker examines purpose and meaning through an unexpected lens: the regrets of the dying. When we build with a long-term perspective and focus on what is personally meaningful within a higher purpose for humanity, we can better design human-centered artificial intelligence. Recorded during GSB Spring Reunions, May 2, 2025.
(Recorded June 9, 2025) Economics departments around the world teach a narrow boundary story of the way our world works. A narrative of infinite growth driven by consumption and money, which has dominated our culture and unknowingly shaped the way we live. But does this story really reflect our biophysical reality – or the full scope of humanity’s role within it? In this week’s Frankly, Nate identifies 10 myths being taught in business schools today, and the massive implications these misconceptions hold for society. From the way we define value and the boundaries of success to the idolization of self-interest and human ingenuity, these so-called laws of economics were developed in a different world than the one we inhabit now. By exposing the unquestioned myths that are perpetuated in MBA education, Nate aims to sow the seeds of an economic system rooted in the real world – which may one day become a reality. What would it take for the long-held “immutable truths” of economic theory to be questioned, and eventually changed to better reflect our material limits? How do we redefine "success" in a way that does not posit GDP as the main indicator of human or economic well being? Most importantly, if we shed ourselves of these delusions, how might we reimagine an economic system that centers the well-being of citizens, the health of the planet, and all of the species we share it with? In this cross over episode, Mariana and Andrew are joined by Gopi Kallayil, Google’s Chief Business Strategist for AI, to explore what he calls “the most profound technology ever created by human beings.” Gopi shares how AI’s evolution is reshaping industries while amplifying human cognition and creativity. They discuss the tightrope between AI’s promise and risks, including the need for new “checks and balances” and emerging defenses against malicious AI. Gopi offers a nuanced take on AI’s impact on jobs, the skills future generations need, and why uniquely human traits will always matter. He also reflects on AI’s explosive rise in public awareness and the trillions in economic value it could unlock—offering an optimistic vision of a smarter, more prosperous world
I explore Perplexity Labs, the AI agent product from Perplexity. I test its capabilities across multiple use cases including creating film storyboards, generating sales leads, developing content strategies, and performing financial analysis. Throughout the demo, I am surprised at the quality and depth of the outputs, particularly the tool's ability to create visual storyboards and comprehensive business dashboards. Timestamps: 00:00 - Introduction to Perplexity Labs 01:18 - Film director AI Agent 07:04 - Salesperson AI Agent 11:11 - Content strategy Consultant AI Agent 20:13 - Financial Analyst AI Agent 24:08 - Salesperson AI Agent (pt2) Key Points: • I test Perplexity Labs' AI agents against other AI tools like ChatGPT, demonstrating its capabilities for various business functions • Perplexity Labs ($20/month) can create detailed film storyboards, sales lead lists, content strategies, and financial analysis • The tool generates comprehensive dashboards with actionable information, including contact details for potential clients 1) Film Director Agent Greg asked Labs to create an 8-minute mini-film ad for his startup @ideabrowser: • It developed a COMPLETE character profile • Created detailed visual storyboards (with actual sketches!) • Wrote a full screenplay with scene descriptions • Added technical film direction notes The quality was so good he was "literally in disbelief" You can use these storyboards for YouTube thumbnails or feed them to tools like VO3 or Kling to create actual videos! 2) AI Sales Agent Greg prompted Labs to create a customer list for a design agency selling AI products to Fortune 500 companies. The results? • Generated contact info for 20+ Fortune 500 CEOs • Created a dashboard with emails, phone numbers & addresses • When asked for YC startups instead, it delivered DETAILED founder info • Even wrote personalized outreach templates based on each startup's focus "This is crazy. More people don't know about this." - Greg 3) Viral Social Media Strategist Greg asked how to replicate Dan Coe's content strategy for a different niche: Labs delivered: • Complete breakdown of Dan's content framework • Analysis of top-performing content types with engagement rates • 90-day content calendar with specific post ideas • Daily/weekly production schedules • Monetization strategies It even calculated exactly how many followers you'd need daily (1,111) to hit 100K in 90 days! 4) Financial Analyst Greg asked for a Warren Buffett-inspired trading strategy focused on AI startups. Labs created: • A complete investment framework adapting Buffett principles to AI • Visual charts showing undervalued vs. overvalued companies • Risk/return profiles for different investment categories • Specific stock recommendations with % below fair value All generated in under 5 minutes! 5) How Perplexity Labs Works Unlike regular Perplexity: • Search = quick Google-like searches • Deep Reach = intensive research • Labs = AI agents ($20/month) The key difference? Labs creates COMPLETE solutions with: • Visual elements • Dashboards • Exportable data • Step-by-step reasoning Is it better than ChatGPT, Claude & Manus? Greg's verdict: "It's definitely in the stack" and there are "arbitrage opportunities" for things Labs does better. Notable Quotes: "I'm literally in disbelief on this... I thought I was going to do this episode on Perplexity Labs and be like, it's not that good. And once I saw this, I was like, wow, this is incredible." "It's crazy more people don't know about this." California has a drone valley now. Zipline, a company already delivering blood and vaccines across Africa, is building a fleet of autonomous delivery drones in the U.S. that can drop a sandwich on your doorstep with dinner-plate accuracy. While Amazon talks and tests, Zipline’s aircraft have already logged 100 million commercial miles, quietly proving that sky deliveries aren’t hype — they’re here. In this episode, we head inside Zipline’s California test site and factory to see how these electric drones work, how they’re built, and why the company thinks it will beat Amazon to your backyard. We watch engineers launch aircraft, stress-test carbon-fiber wings, and demo a burrito-by-air drop that actually works. Enjoy! For investors, geopolitical risks are always lurking as a factor that could upend trades for obvious reasons. When war breaks out, it's crucial to have some kind of understanding of what it will mean for various markets (such as oil or grain) and how long the conflict can persist. But is there any way to analyze these things scientifically? Many people are paid by investors to try to do exactly this. On this episode, we speak with Andrew Bishop, the global head of policy research at Signum Global, about what he does, and how he attempts to forecast the future. We use the recent conflict between Israel and Iran (as well as other sources of global tension) to get a better understanding of how he goes about forecasting, how investors use his research, and what he sees going forward. Sure, AI coding assistants can speed up prototyping. We've all seen the vibe-coding demo's that conjure up proof-of-concepts in minutes instead of days. A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet and are advocating a bold solution: degrowth. Originating in France, the degrowth movement has spread to places like Japan, the UK and Barcelona, taking root in academia, grassroots organisations and among university students. The movement argues for a 'democratisation of the economy' and for collectively managing key resources, like housing. Critics argue that opposing economic growth is impractical and warn of negative consequences, especially for the most vulnerable. We take a look at the theory - and ask what the practice might look like. 00:00 Intro 02:32 The Barcelona School of Ecological economics: the roots of degrowth 05:39 Is GDP a good measure of our economies? 06:45 Could the economy be more democratic? 08:07 A net-zero housing cooperative 10:16 What can grow, and what needs to degrow? 12:31 Could green growth be a solution? 13:29 Degrowth and social justice 17:18 Challenging degrowth Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #Degrowth #Sustainability #BBCNews
Why Intelligent People Detach Themselves from Others - Carl Jung There's something unsettling about highly intelligent people that most can't quite put their finger on. They seem distant, almost unreachable at times. Not cold, but selectively engaged. Not antisocial, but strategically solitary. What you're witnessing isn't arrogance or superiority—it's something far more profound and psychologically sophisticated. #philosophy #Psychology #Stoicism
The sovereign debt bubble and the dollar- are we approaching the end game? Well, we’ve actually been here before, about 80yrs ago and the parallels are striking. What lessons can be gained from then? What similarities are we seeing to today, where Trump is signaling a EM-like fiscal dominance approach to the debt? What about the shadow fed chair, and the potential elimination of Fed independence. Turns out, there’s a parallel there, too. Where will all of this lead? The 2024 Nobel winner explains what AI has learned from biological intelligence, and how it might one day surpass it. There's a Q&A session for this talk available here, exclusively for our Science Supporters: https://youtu.be/-hZlv90HNm4 --- This Discourse was recorded at the Ri on 30 May 2025. Find out more about our 200 year old Discourse series here: https://www.rigb.org/explore-science/explore/blog/history-friday-evening-discourse Our apologies as we aware there are some audio imperfections at the beginning of the talk, but they are resolved from 00:02:00 onwards. -- Tech headlines in the last couple of years have been dominated by Artificial Intelligence. But what do we actually mean by intelligence? What has AI learned from biological intelligence, and how do they still differ? Acclaimed computer scientist, and winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, Geoffrey Hinton will examine the similarities and differences between artificial and biological intelligence, following his decades of ground-breaking work which has enabled the neural networks of today. --- Geoffrey Hinton is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, and a world renowned expert in the field of deep learning. He is often referred to as the "Godfather of AI", and in 2024 was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks". He is a fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Canada, and has been recognised with many awards around the world including the Turing Award, the Royal Society Royal Medal, and Dickson Prize. Hinton received a BA in Experimental Psychology from the University of Cambridge in 1970 and his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1978. Following postdoctoral work at Sussex University and the University of California San Diego, he joined the Computer Science department at Carnegie Mellon University, before moving to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto in 1987. He set up the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London before becoming University Professor in Toronto in 2006 and latterly University Professor Emeritus. He later went on to co-found Sun Microsystems in 1982, serving as its first chairman and CEO. After joining Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers (KPCB), Vinod intubated the idea for Juniper Networks to take on Cisco System’s dominance of the router market, a company that would give KPCB a 2,500x return on its early investment. My site: https://natebjones.com My substack: https://natesnewsletter.substack.com/ The Story : https://open.substack.com/pub/natesnewsletter/p/i-threw-my-real-workday-at-two-ai?r=1z4sm5&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true Takeaways: 1. UI, Not AI: Comet’s breakthrough is a friction-free interface that lets the assistant disappear and simply get the job done, instead of forcing users to micromanage agent steps. 2. True General-Purpose Agent: Unlike task builders such as Zapier or n8n, Comet juggles email, calendar, LinkedIn, research, and web actions in one fluent workflow. 3. Operator’s UX Cautionary Tale: OpenAI’s Operator shows that even powerful models fail if wrapped in a toy-sized, sluggish browser—bad UX kills adoption. 4. ROI by Time-Saved Math: At $200/month, Comet’s value hinges on adding up the 10-15-minute slices it saves; ten hours saved at $35/hour already doubles the spend. 5. Browser-as-OS Strategy: By owning the browsing layer and “glowing” the page blue while it works, Perplexity positions Comet as the operating system for web-based AI. 6. Months Ahead of Schedule: Comet’s speed, reliability, and data hookups arrived three-to-four months sooner than expected, delivering the first general-purpose agent that feels production-ready. Quotes: “We want the assistant to do the work and disappear.” “It’s not AI, it’s UI—that’s why Comet shines.” “I actually saw a general-purpose agent that worked today.” Summary: I’ve spent months testing AI “agents,” but none impacted my day until Perplexity’s Comet. The magic isn’t the model; it’s the interface. Comet slips into the background, handles calendar reshuffles, email drafts, LinkedIn triage, even local restaurant searches, all without making me babysit it. Operator and other tools bury you in tiny toy browsers or flow builders, proving that bad UX kills great tech. At $200 a month the only question is whether its 10-15-minute micro-saves add up to more than the cost. For me, the speed, reliability and browser-level integration finally deliver a general-purpose agent worth paying for today. Keywords: Comet, Perplexity, AI agent, general-purpose assistant, user interface, Operator, Mariner, Zapier, n8n, time savings, ROI, browser OS, calendar integration, Gmail, LinkedIn, agentic workflow, $200/month, social commerce, TikTok Shop, Amazon strategy

President Trump is determined to lower the interest paid on government debt one way or the other. One way is replacing Fed Chair Powell with a Trump loyalist who tries to convince the rest of the FOMC that the federal funds rate must fall, the data be damned. Another involves replacing maturing long-term Treasury bonds with short-term Treasury bills until long-term bond yields fall enough to refinance advantageously. Such “Yield Curve Control” requires the cooperation of US Treasury Secretary Bessent (which Trump has) and the Bond Vigilantes (which he doesn’t). Is it a clever way to lower the federal government’s net interest outlays or is it a catalyst to capital markets turmoil?
Glenn Carle is an American writer and former intelligence officer. He is the author of The Interrogator: An Education (2011), which describes his involvement in the interrogation of a man at the time believed to be one of the top members of al-Qa'ida. Johns Hopkins Magazine has found The Interrogator to be "unusually candid in its portrayal of the CIA's internal workings—and the toll the agency's moral grey zones take on its operatives". Glenn spent 20 years in clandestine field operations with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Carle retired as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Transnational Threats from the National Intelligence Council. Carle has been critical of President Donald Trump, particularly after Trump began to disparage American intelligence agencies' assessment of Russian influence over the 2016 presidential election. He told Newsweek, in an article dated December 21, 2017, that he believed that President Donald Trump was "actually working directly for the Russians." Among other roles, Glenn is a Columnist for Newsweek Japan, providing commentary and analysis of international relations, Geo-strategic, and US political issues, and foreign policy and intelligence issues. ---------- DESCRIPTION: The Shadow Wars: Glenn Carl on Russian Influence, U.S. Intelligence, and Global Authoritarianism In this episode, former CIA officer and author Glenn Carl discusses his career in intelligence, focusing on themes such as the internal workings of the CIA, the impact of moral gray zones on operatives, and the nuances of Russian active measures. Carl critiques President Trump's stance on U.S. intelligence agencies and comments on Russian tampering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The conversation delves into the strategic shift from focusing on Russia to China, Putin's KGB background, and how Russian tactics destabilize Western democracies. The episode also explores the erosion of U.S. democratic norms through internal and external influences, the complexity of intelligence operations, and the enduring legacy of Carl Schmitt's authoritarian ideas in contemporary U.S. politics. ---------- CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction to Glenn Carl 00:36 Glenn Carl's Career and Criticism of Trump 01:24 Thanking the Supporters 01:54 Discussing Russia and the Cold War 04:40 Shift in US Strategic Focus 06:00 The Role of Russian Intelligence 06:49 Putin's Influence and Russian Nationalism 18:09 The Struggle in Ukraine 24:05 Putin's Background and Russian State Dynamics 41:25 The Influence of Vladislav Surkov 44:54 Russian Strategy to Undermine the US 46:53 Recommended Reading on Russian Influence 48:09 Authoritarian Toolkits and Their Impact 49:02 US Vulnerabilities and Russian Exploitation 49:48 Russian Influence in Europe 01:00:24 Traditionalism vs. Modernism 01:08:21 Trump's Motivations and Russian Influence 01:12:10 Historical Intelligence Operations 01:20:01 The Current State of US Democracy 01:24:07 Conclusion andhttps://glenncarle.com/ Final Thoughts ---------- LINKS: https://glenncarle.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Carle https://www.linkedin.com/in/glenn-carle-2031706/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0134b2d https://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Interrogator-An-Education/dp/B005UVQIAU ---------- Car for Ukraine has once again joined forces with a group of influencers, creators, and news observers during this summer. ➡️ Watch the full interview ad-free, join a community of geopolitics enthusiasts and gain access to exclusive content on PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/DecodingGeopolitics ➡️ Sign up to my free geopolitics newsletter: https://stationzero.substack.com/ This is a conversation with Gregory Smith, a policy analyst at Rand focusing on the influence of AI and emerging technologies on geopolitics. And this was - and I hope I don't offend any of my other guests by saying - one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve ever had on the podcast. Today, we are at a point when there’s a realistic chance that in the next decade or so we might get an AGI - artificial general intelligence or even ASI - artificial superintelligence: a next stage of AI that would be able to do everything that humans can and possibly even significantly better. If that happens it will radically transform every aspect of our lives but while the impact on other areas is widely discussed - how it might reshape geopolitics is largely ignored - even though its impact would be absolutely transformational. Greg and his colleagues at Rand recently published an extremely interesting paper where they for the first time try to explore what that might look like - and they present 8 different scenarios of how AGI can transform the global world order. Most of them are pretty bad but all of them are fascinating - leading to a rise of new superpowers, fall of the old ones and a fundamentally different world. And in this conversation, we discuss what that world might look like.

Bill Fleckenstein, founder and president of Fleckenstein Capital, returns to The Julia La Roche Show for episode 276 where he provides an assessment of America's financial predicament, arguing that 30 years of Federal Reserve easy money policies have created damage to the economy and society. He explains how the Treasury is attempting to manage the $36 trillion debt crisis by rolling financing to the short end of the curve while allowing banks to increase leverage ratios, creating demand for government bonds. Fleckenstein believes market analysis no longer applies due to the dominance of passive flows, making shorting ineffective and valuations meaningless. He's holding more cash than ever in his investment career and warns that we're past the point of no return financially. Beyond economics, he's concerned about wealth bifurcation driving younger generations toward financial gambling or socialism, eroding American society's fabric. (Conversation recorded May 28th, 2025) Money, debt, and finance shape the lives of everyone globally, including through the policies and actions of national central banks – yet even those who are well-versed in these subjects often miss the full scope of these intricate relationships. For the average person, headlines about mounting government debt and surging interest rates often feel like a confusing and concerning trend. What can we learn from historical cycles, global energy dynamics, and the differing fiscal strategies of nations about the trajectory of the world economy? In today’s episode, Nate is joined once more by Lyn Alden for a deeper exploration of the intricate relationships between fiscal dominance, rising levels of debt, and the role of energy in shaping our current financial realities. Lyn explains how a historical analysis shines light on the gaps in economic theories like Keynesianism and Modern Monetary Theory, and what the implications are for our present situation. Using this perspective, they discuss recent trends in Bitcoin, Stablecoins, and Artificial Intelligence – and what further developments in these areas might mean for average people in developed and developing countries alike. How can a deeper understanding of these dynamics prepare us for the economic challenges ahead? What lessons can we draw from past instances when public debt reached unsustainable levels? And as governments attempt to navigate familiar problems with new approaches, how might individuals prepare for the acceleration of this unstoppable train as we head into an increasingly uncertain future? About Lyn Alden: Lyn Alden is an independent analyst and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy with a background in engineering management. Her work provides institutional-level research in plain English, so that both institutional investors and retail investors can benefit from it. Lyn also serves as an independent director on the board of Swan.com and as a general partner at the venture capital firm Ego Death Capital. She is the author of the 2023 best-selling book Broken Money about the past, present, and future of money through the lens of technology. Lyn has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in engineering management, with a focus on engineering economics, systems engineering, and financial modeling. She worked for over a decade as an electrical engineer at the Federal Aviation Administration’s William J. Hughes Technical Center. Lyn Alden and Andy Constan go deep on Bitcoin treasury companies like Strategy, debating whether they’re outright Ponzi schemes or legitimate vehicles for leveraged Bitcoin exposure. We dig into how these companies actually generate returns, why premiums to NAV exist, and the conditions that could cause the model to unravel. Lyn lays out her cautiously bullish case for well-run treasuries, while Andy argues the structure depends on new capital in ways that can’t last forever. What if the secret to human intelligence lies not in layers of neural networks, but in the brain’s elegant, repeating microarchitecture—cortical columns? In this groundbreaking video, we dive deep into the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence to reveal how these tiny vertical circuits—just 100 neurons each—may hold the key to symbolic reasoning, concept formation, and common sense understanding. By reimagining the brain as a biological graph processor, we challenge the foundations of modern AI and unveil a radically more efficient model that could revolutionize cognitive architectures, machine learning, and next-generation AGI. If you're interested in brain-inspired computing, graph-based cognition, or how 20 watts of biology outperforms a data center, this is a video you can’t afford to miss. ________________________________________ Useful links: The Future AI Society: https://futureaisociety.org The Brain Simulator III (UKS) project: https://github.com/FutureAIGuru/BrainSimIII The Brain Simulator II (Neural Simulator) project: https://github.com/FutureAIGuru/BrainSimII Overview Video: https://youtu.be/W2uauk2bFjs More Details Video: https://youtu.be/6po1rMFZkik How the UKS Learns Video: https://youtu.be/Rv0lrem3lVs ________________________________________
In this episode of Excess Returns, Mike Green returns to dissect the structural transformation underway in public markets due to the rise of passive investing. He explains why “there’s no such thing as a passive investor,” how inelastic flows distort prices, and what it means for valuation, volatility, and the long-term sustainability of equity markets. From the math behind market multipliers to the policy distortions driving mega-cap dominance, Mike walks through the macro, micro, and behavioral implications of passive flows — and what investors and policymakers need to do about it. Paul Buitink talks to William White, an economist who worked at the Bank of England, Bank of Canada, Bank of International Settlements (where he was chief economist) and the OECD. William is 82 years old and has decades of experience as in insider. They discuss the dismal state of cooperation between the West and the Global South. They also dive into the perilous state of the eurozone due to France's financial troubles. Is the euro sustainable? What was the role of the BIS at its creation? William also explains how the boom bust cycle works, how central banks always resort to money printing and why he saw the Great Financial Crisis coming. We are currently in bubble territory. He sums up all the bad alternatives out there when it comes to curing our financial system. He also gives his view on how the likelihood of a Bretton Woods II is. Richard Sutton is the father of reinforcement learning, winner of the 2024 Turing Award, and author of The Bitter Lesson. And he thinks LLMs are a dead end. After interviewing him, my steel man of Richard’s position is this: LLMs aren’t capable of learning on-the-job, so no matter how much we scale, we’ll need *some* new architecture to enable continual learning. And once we have it, we won’t need a special training phase — the agent will just learn on-the-fly, like all humans, and indeed, like all animals. This new paradigm will render our current approach with LLMs obsolete. In our interview, I did my best to represent the view that LLMs might function as the foundation on which experiential learning can happen… Some sparks flew. A big thanks to the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute for inviting me up to Edmonton and for letting me use their studio and equipment. Enjoy! Doomberg sees Russia's recent deal with China for natural gas through the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline as a watershed moment for the world, as the BRICS further distance themselves from America and Europe and completely redefine the geopolitical chess board. Doomberg also outlines why he believes that the US will attack Venezuela and ignite a kinetic war in a bid to secure the country's vast oil reserves, why the EU's economic collapse is self-inflicted by politicians clinging to the climate religion, and much more. WORRIED ABOUT THE MARKET? SCHEDULE YOUR FREE PORTFOLIO REVIEW with Thoughtful Money's endorsed financial advisors at https://www.thoughtfulmoney.com Last week saw a big reversal that jarred Wall Street: after reporting yet-again blockbuster results and upgrading its forecast, Nvidia stock first rose 6%, then fell to close the day down -3% This dragged the major indices down with it, along with most high growth Tech stocks, as well. Suddenly Wall Street starting panicking that the AI bubble had just burst before its eyes. Did it? Or was this just a pullback to set the markets up for an end-of-year rally? To address these pressing questions, we're fortunate to welcome back to the program technical analyst and author Michael Oliver, founder of market research firm Momentum Structural Analysis. Michael sees the market as topping out here, a process that will take months. But he fears the 'worst bear market' of our lifetime may start next year. To find out why, and where to seek safety during it, watch this video. Follow Michael at https://www.olivermsa.com/ #marketcorrection #bearmarket #nvidia 00:00 – Last week’s reversal: Nvidia & Nasdaq 100 broke momentum, S&P barely held 03:04 – Market has been in a multi-year topping process since late 2024 / early 2025 04:11 – Long-term momentum (not price) has already broken massive uptrend structures 05:10 – 2000 & 2007 tops were drawn-out, confusing affairs – we’re repeating that pattern 06:58 – Rate cuts are a panic signal, not bullish – same in 2001 & 2007 09:12 – Fed funds rate has been in the bottom third of 75-year range for 15 years → “Chin-Chong bubble” 12:21 – This will be worse than GFC: global debt at crisis levels, bond market losing control 14:41 – Asset bubble bigger than anything in U.S. history – 15-year, 11-20× move on free money 16:21 – Economic & societal fallout will be broad – potential challenge to Fed, fiat, two-party system 18:35 – Gold vs. S&P spread: decade-plus base breakout – “something big just began” 21:55 – Gold at $4,000 is only halfway to prior bull-market ratio gains (8× still possible) 23:42 – Silver vs. Gold spread: four-year downtrend breaking – “silver will beat everything” 26:02 – Silver could hit $150–$200 in 6 months once triggers fire (historical precedent) 28:35 – Gold/silver miners vastly undervalued – poised to massively outperform metals 30:07 – Bitcoin has broken critical momentum – expects ~60k before any real bounce 32:27 – Bitcoin is just high-beta Nasdaq – “the game may be over for public perception” 35:20 – Commodities (especially energy) setting up for major outperformance – recession won’t stop it 37:48 – Financials (XLF) massively underperforming – back below prior breakout levels 40:02 – T-bonds showing illiquidity & loss of control – NY Fed openly talking direct buying 42:40 – “This is a lifetime event, not a 20-year event” – generational shift underway 45:06 – Silver miners “dirt cheap” – best leverage play in monetary metals 47:21 – Final outlook: rapid, painful downside in 2026 – but far better world on the other side 50:23 – Parting advice: rethink everything – shift into monetary metals & commodity stocks now 52:26 – “When these triggers pull, it’s the beginning, not the end – don’t wait for perfect confirmation” _____________________________________________ Thoughtful Money LLC is a Registered Investment Advisor Promoter. In this video, I distill 30 years of productivity research and wisdom from dozens of books into six timeless lessons that actually work. You don’t need hacks, gimmicks, or 18-hour workdays. You need a system that helps you do less, focus on what matters, and build habits that last. Here’s what we’ll cover: – Why doing less ruthlessly is the secret to accomplishing more – How to protect your “golden hours” for deep, focused work – The simple rules that clear clutter and eliminate distractions – Why tracking progress motivates better than praise or pressure – How elite performers use breaks as fuel, not laziness – The real key to long-term success: consistency over intensity These aren’t tips for cramming more into your day. They’re principles for designing a life where you get better work done with less stress — and keep doing it for years. Watch through to the end to see how these six lessons fit together into a blueprint you can start using tomorrow. -- To find out more about Daniel Pink, his books, and view his resources, visit https://danpink.com
Abby Innes goes in-depth into how neoliberalism has 'Sovietized' Britain, and the field of economics itself. Is Keir Starmer a Brezhnev or a Khrushchev? With a free trial, you can watch Abby give a lecture on Late Soviet Britain at https://iai.tv/video/neoliberalism-a-soviet-nightmare?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description In this IAI Studio interview, political economist and LSE associate professor Abby Innes argues that Britain’s governing model has more in common with the Soviet Union than many would care to admit. Drawing on her book Late Soviet Britain, Innes explores how the UK’s embrace of managerialism and economic determinism has produced a system that promises technical neutrality but delivers ideological rigidity. Do we mistakenly treat economics as an exact science? Can a political system function when economic decisions are removed from democratic debate? And has Britain’s faith in market mechanisms created a new form of central planning? #neoliberalism #economics #sovietunion #ukpolitics Abby Innes is Associate Professor of Political Economy at the European Institute, London School of Economics. Stijn Schmitz welcomes Matt Smith to the show. Matt Smith is Co-Author of "The Preparation" and Host of "Doug Casey's Take" Podcast. The conversation centers on the current economic landscape, with a particular focus on gold, monetary policy, and potential global financial reset. Smith discusses the unprecedented rise in gold prices, noting it has topped $4,040 and suggesting this bull market is unique. He believes the United States and China may have an unspoken agreement to use gold as a "liquidity sink" to manage massive economic challenges, particularly the enormous $175 trillion in unfunded liabilities. *Find Out More About Palisades Goldcorp, Canada's Leading Junior Resource Investment Company:* ► Website: https://palisades.ca *Palisade Radio Links:* ► Website & Newsletter: https://palisadesradio.ca ► Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1586024 Smith argues that the current gold price surge is not just about preservation of capital, but potentially wealth creation. He points to historical comparisons, such as housing prices measured in gold terms, which have dramatically shifted over the past decades. Morgan Stanley's recent recommendation of 20% portfolio allocation to gold underscores the metal's growing importance. The discussion explores broader geopolitical and economic trends, including potential monetary resets and the role of critical minerals. Smith is skeptical of traditional higher education, instead advocating for a more experiential learning approach outlined in his book "The Preparation", which he co-authored with Doug Casey. Regarding gold and precious metals, Smith believes we are in the early stages of a significant market transformation. He sees gold as uniquely positioned to serve as a monetary reset mechanism, with potentially dramatic price increases ahead. He suggests the price could reach extraordinary levels, as part of a broader economic recalibration. The conversation touches on various global economic dynamics, including trade wars, critical mineral strategies, and potential geopolitical shifts. Throughout, Smith maintains a pragmatic yet cautious perspective on current economic trends, emphasizing the potential for significant structural changes in the global monetary system. Jon Czin spent years as a top China analyst at the CIA, served as China Director on Biden’s National Security Council, and now works at the Brookings Institution. We discuss what Xi’s fourth-term means for China’s top leadership and military, Taiwan, and the US. We cover: How Xi’s mafioso-style “decapitation strategy” has kept the PLA in line and why he’s purged more generals than Mao. Cognitive decline and how end-of-life thinking might be shaping Xi’s succession plans and Taiwan strategy. Tariffs, rare earths, and China’s appetite for pain vs. America’s. Beijing’s parochialism and its limits in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. What intelligence work on China actually looks like and whether or not Xi’s era is duller than previous generations. Plus: who might succeed Xi, comparing the Politburo Standing Committee to a frat house, and why chips and TSMC matter much less in Xi’s Taiwan calculus than most think.

(Recorded November 10th, 2025) In this episode, Nate weaves personal reflections into an exploration of the human predicament, unpacking a series of chronological insights that have reshaped his worldview. What began years ago as an investigation into oil has morphed into a deep lifelong journey into the complex web of energy, psychology, evolution, and systems that drive today's society. By sharing stories and realizations from his own life, whether it’s the debunking of Wall Street energy illusions or unpacking how sexual selection is often as important a behavioral driver as natural selection, Nate invites listeners to step back and see the human story through a much wider lens. This episode combines Nate’s own evolution of understanding with the overarching narrative of The Great Simplification, speaking to what it means to be human in a dichotomous era of abundance and depletion, of numbness and awakening. It is perhaps more important than ever to be able to see our civilization through this wider perspective: not just as a disparate collection of individuals, but as a living – and learning – superorganism standing at the crossroads of deep time. How might our understanding of progress change if we saw energy, not money, as the true currency of life? What would it mean to live with full awareness of our interconnectedness with the world and systems around us? And could this moment in history mark the shedding of some of the evolutionary impulses that ensured our survival, in favor of a new kind of planetary wisdom? Denis Noble explains why Richard Dawkins' theory of the selfish gene is incorrect. Have biologists completely misunderstood the function of genes? With a free trial, you can watch the full talk NOW at https://iai.tv/video/genes-are-not-the-blueprint-for-life?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description Popularised by Richard Dawkins' work 'The Selfish Gene', we think genes are the blueprint for life. But might this commonly-held view of biology and evolution be mistaken? Join renowned Oxford biologist, Denis Noble, as he proposes the radical new theory that organisms control their genomes rather than the other way around. #biology #science #genetics #genes #molecularbiology #evolution Denis Noble is Professor Emeritus and co-Director of Computational Physiology at Oxford University. Noble was one of the pioneers of Systems Biology and developed the first viable mathematical model of the working heart. His books include the first popular science book on the subject, The Music of Life, which has been translated into 12 languages. But what if it’s not entirely true? What if, contrary to this tenet, it’s wealthy Western nations who have over-developed and lost their resilience in the process? This is the argument made by John Rapley in his latest book ‘Icarus Economics’. Rapley is a political economist at the University of Cambridge and a Senior Fellow at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Studies. In conversation with Aaron Bastani, Rapley discusses how the West’s growth has reached certain limits, most notably those imposed by the natural world in which we are all embedded. Has a focus on the wrong kind of growth in the West reduced resilience to shocks from the natural world? Are the majority of us already in a recession, despite what GDP figures tell us? And what can the Global North learn from the Global South? 00:00 Intro 03:13 Icarus Economics: Flying Too Close to the Sun 06:48 Is the Global South Actually MORE Resilient? 09:02 Rich Isn’t Resilient 13:42 Pace Layers 15:32 The Doomed Attempt to Transcend Nature 19:45 How Ready Are We for the Next Shock? 24:08 The Cultural Revolution and China’s Preparedness 32:09 America’s Fake Growth and the Ceiling to Growth 37:10 Most People Are Already in a Recession 43:29 Surviving a Hurricane: Community as Resilience 48:53 The Rise and Fall of American Growth 51:16 How China is Preparing Students for AI 52:25 The Great Acceleration: 1948 – 1973 56:42 The Myth of Eternal Growth 1:05:08 The Question of Releasing Pensions 1:07:29 A Longer View of Time 1:11:50 We Need Political Leadership 1:15:43 What Makes a Good Politician? 1:18:28 Do Young People Have It Worse Today? 1:21:14 Opening a Bookstore: an Impossible Dream in the West 1:27:05 Modern Examples of Resilience 1:32:08 Resilience in the Ancient Roman Empire Icarus Economics by John Rapley (2026) is available from Atlantic Books.
Mike Munger of Duke University talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the world of profit, money, love, gifts, and incentives. What motivates people, self-interest or altruism? Both obviously. But how do these forces interact with each other? Does relying on one always provide a stronger incentive than the other? Do charities, for-profit businesses or government agencies do a better job providing a good or service? Munger and Roberts have a wide-ranging discussion across these issues including a section where they discuss whether Christmas gift-giving and gift-giving in general is inefficient. https://www.econtalk.org/munger-on-love-money-profits-and-non-profits/
Garett Jones of George Mason University talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the art of communicating economics via puzzles and short provocative insights. They discuss Jones's Twitter strategy of posting quotes and short puzzles to provoke thinking. Jones, drawing on his experience as a Senate staffer, discusses the interaction between politics and economics in the area of tax cuts and earmarks. For example, are earmarks good or bad? Jones gives an unconventional analysis. He also discusses the economics of the new workplace and why that might mean a different path for productivity over the business cycle than in the past. https://www.econtalk.org/garett-jones-on-macro-and-twitter/
