Erwin Chargaff's autobiography 'Heraclitean Fire' is an excellent book on what science should be, contrasting genuine scientific inquiry with the deadening approach of following out linear paths mechanistically—Chargaff was a great biochemist who laid groundwork for Watson and Crick but thought more deeply about science's meaning.
