USSR competed in a game it could not win

Because the drive for imperial greatness was so important, the Soviets kept expanding support to costly commitments (Vietnam, Cuba, Africa) even as the empire drained them, meaning throughout the Cold War the USSR was competing in a game it fundamentally could not win.
