DEFUSE proposal planned to insert furin sites

The DEFUSE proposal, a 2018 collaboration between EcoHealth Alliance and the WIV that leaked in 2021, specifically planned to find novel low-risk SARS-like coronaviruses and insert furin cleavage sites into them, providing a plausible pipeline by which the pandemic virus could have been created roughly two years before the outbreak.
