Throughout history luxuries tend to become necessities as people become convinced they cannot live without them, which is especially problematic because if everyone in China, India, and Africa attained the average American standard of living—big houses, SUVs, vacations abroad—global ecology would collapse under present technology, forcing a stark choice between billions remaining unhappy and destroying the planet.
