Hope is as much a verb as a virtue: as long as there is motion, activity, and dynamism tied to the love of truth, goodness, and beauty—whether in political demonstrations or the vitality of the scientific community—real possibilities remain, and hope, in Shelley's phrase, creates from its own wreck the very thing it contemplates.
