Words Are Off Switches For The Mind

Once we have a satisfactory label or terminology — everyday or scientific — we satisfice and shut down our reasoning about it, becoming complacent that we all share the same understanding and ceasing to inspect what the word really means; in this sense words are 'off switches for the mind.'
