Larger brain regions gain abstraction via fewer neurons

In large-brained animals certain cortical regions evolve and develop not by adding neurons but by developing fewer, larger neurons with much more connectivity, which lets the brain summarize information more efficiently and perform abstraction—finding functional similarities among things that look, feel, smell, and taste different.
