Forecast models are very good, reliable predictors in normal circumstances, but no ensemble has ever forecast and then verified against a 3.6 degree Celsius El Niño because such an event has never happened before, and there are still uncertainties that cut both ways—upwards and downwards—and forecasts are never a guarantee of future meteorological events.
