Enforced Religion Reduces Actual Belief

Trying to maintain a religious culture through hard political impositions and religious tests tends to produce less actual religion, as shown by the Islamic Republic of Iran arguably being less religious than at the revolution, Erdogan's Turkey, and the fragile mid-20th-century Catholic polities of Ireland and Quebec that collapsed when touched by modern forces.
