Atmospheric Oxygen as Biomarker

Because oxygen is so chemically reactive that any free oxygen on a planet would react away to zero in little time, a stable atmospheric supply of oxygen (or other unstable molecules like methane or phosphine) is a powerful biomarker indicating that life is constantly producing it, which is where the real answers about extraterrestrial life will come from as we study exoplanet atmospheres.
