Mixing Levels Of Description Causes Apparent Conflict

The tension Harris points to comes from illegitimately mixing two levels of description: one may talk about humans as agents talking to other people and making choices, or about brains being influenced by subconscious processes and histories, but not both at the same time; the error is translating person-level words like 'you' and 'yourself' down into the brain-level vocabulary, just as recognizing a chair is made of atoms does not abolish the chair.

you're allowed to talk about you as a person talking to other people making choices or you're allowed to talk about brains being influenced by things but not both at the same time
