Ideal Theory Is Methodologically Unreliable

Aiming political philosophy at an ideal society is unreliable because we cannot know what the relevant normative categories will be in the future, ideal theory tends to paper over present structural injustices, and moral inquiry may never converge on a fixed ideal—so we should start from current problems and treat our ideals as error-prone, revising them by living through them.
