Verbal Overshadowing Degrades Memory

Putting perceptions into words can degrade memory: priming people with a label ('eyeglasses' vs 'dumbbell') systematically distorts how they later redraw the same figure, and witnesses who verbally describe a perpetrator's face are worse at later identifying it in a lineup — a 'verbal overshadowing' effect arising because categorization throws away the distinguishing details.
