The Netherlands was the first country to break out of millennia of poverty and stagnation because it simultaneously experienced a technological revolution (tall ships, water management), a globalization revolution (creating the first joint stock company and stock market), and a political-identity revolution (Protestant Dutch identity separate from Hapsburg Empire).
