The vast majority of violent crime—roughly 80%, leaving only about 20% stranger-based—is committed by people known to the victim, which means much risk can be mitigated by living a life away from chaos and by assessing the character of those one lets into one's home and around one's children, an aspect self-defense instructors typically neglect in favor of the stranger threat.
