Gentleman Scientist Era Is Bygone

The gentleman scientist era (the Charles Darwin type) is bygone because science is vastly bigger, mostly government-funded since the mid-20th century after WWII, and unrecognizable from a century ago; while a full return is unlikely, there is enormous room to give scientists more academic and creative freedom within the current constrained funding model.
