Prepaid Postage Democratized Letter-Writing

Rowland Hill's 1844 invention of prepaid postage in England transformed communication and romance by letting anyone buy a stamp and send a letter without going to a post office and engaging a clerk, enabling a flood of personal correspondence; Frederick Douglass especially valued it for enabling the enslaved to write and send letters.
