Reputation for toughness can deter without violence

In honor cultures the very point of the norm is that if it is clear one can respond to a challenge when called upon, one usually does not need to; the equilibrium is to project a credible reputation that one cannot be messed with so that violence becomes unnecessary—those who can credibly signal willingness to be violent if required need not actually be violent and avoid victimization.
