Once surface waters begin warming during El Niño, they heat the atmosphere above them, which weakens the trade winds even further, allowing more warm water to move east and weaken the winds more, creating a classic positive feedback loop known as the Bjerknes Feedback, named after Norwegian meteorologist Jacob Bjerknes.
