My parents' interest in specific domains (Buckminster Fuller, systems theory, Eastern philosophy, design science, existential questions about human purpose) significantly shaped what I became interested in, and while this demonstrates both the power of the constructivist approach and its limits—you can't separate what you're exposed to from what you become interested in.
