Collective responsibility is felt as just, not merely instrumental

Collective punishment and collective responsibility in genuine honor cultures are not merely instrumental signaling; members feel it is genuinely just that the whole group is accountable for one member's act. The same norm of collective identification also generates the positive duty to compensate victims for harms a relative caused ('my brother can't make it right but I can'), and it produces healthy self-policing within groups since members know they will pay for each other's transgressions.
