Purpose (teleology) cannot be adequately explained by evolutionary theory because evolutionary thinking tries to explain human motivations while simultaneously studying the human who is doing the explaining, creating a self-referential loop that forces us to recognize purpose and meaning are intrinsic to how organisms function.
