Empathy Can Break Through Pernicious Ideology

Because emotions like empathy have natural objects—any being capable of suffering or joy, even projected onto stuffed animals or fictional characters—empathy has no inherent boundaries and can break through unjust ideologies that would otherwise restrict our moral concern to people like ourselves.
