Three-Stage Demographic Transition

The demographic transition proceeds in stages: first, high mortality and high birth rates roughly balance; second, basic interventions (disease control, fresh water, sanitation) drop mortality while fertility stays high (10-12 children), causing populations to spike; third, fertility falls as people choose to invest more in fewer children once they have confidence those children will survive.
