In an FBI-authorized study, Kevin Esvelt ordered 1918 flu as 500-nucleotide fragments from about 38 providers, and all but two fulfilled the orders — several IGSC members among them — because US regulations cover full DNA sequences but not fragments, proving anyone with a credit card can assemble the genome despite thinly disguised orders.
