Hard Power Can't Engineer Political Outcomes
The central lesson of Iraq and Afghanistan is that it is extremely hard to use hard military power to engineer political and social outcomes; the US tried with hundreds of thousands of boots on the ground and still couldn't manage those situations, making a benign democratic transition in Iran from outside intervention unlikely even though surprising outcomes cannot be ruled out.
