Word Categories Serve Social Coordination

Linguistic categories do not spring directly from concepts or percepts in our heads; they emerge from instances of social coordination — a triadic relation between speaker, hearer, and the bit of reality being aligned upon — so their primary function is collaborative coordination, not conceptualization.
