The concept of a conscious experience (the taste of mint, the smell of garlic) is itself the starting point for a scientific theory of consciousness, not something that needs to be reduced to or explained by non-conscious processes; this is more parsimonious than theories that must both explain consciousness and explain away the initial evidence.
