The creation of humans as male and female in Genesis 1 shows that man (humanity) contains the duality of heaven and earth within himself: male and female represent actuality and potentiality, form and formlessness, order and chaos—humans are microcosms of the heaven-earth distinction and thus can encounter the world as the union of these principles.
