European shale gas reserves exist but are located under population centers (unlike US shales in North Dakota and West Texas), making fracking politically impossible due to neighborhood opposition, and even if pursued, European shales are deeper, smaller, thinner, and less petroleum-dense than US shales, yielding only 1/6 the oil production for equivalent investment.
