definition

Affect (mood) is an always-present body barometer

Because the brain constantly regulates the body and the body sends back sense data, the brain always computes affect—a vague sense of bodily state plus feeling pleasant/unpleasant and worked-up/calm—which scientists call affect and laypeople call mood; it is a property of consciousness present at all times, distinct from emotion, which is conjured only situationally.
