Liberal democracy needs restraints on the median voter
Democracy has two things we care about: reflecting the median voter's views, and preventing the median voter from doing whatever it wants to the rest of the population; the rise of electoral democracies worldwide (now outnumbering autocracies) has delivered the first but lacks the liberal element of rule of law and minority protections, allowing election winners to trample the rights of non-majorities.
