Ukraine is far worse for Russia than Afghanistan was for USSR

Ukraine is much more consequential for Russia than Afghanistan was for the USSR: Afghanistan killed about 13,000 Soviet citizens, was hidden from society until glasnost, and was a small fraction of the military budget, whereas Ukraine has produced roughly a million casualties, reframed all of Russian reality, isolated the country, and is arguably existential for Putin's regime.
