Truth has three structural disadvantages in competition with fiction: (1) it is costly to produce, requiring expertise and institutional investment; (2) it is complicated because reality is complicated, while fiction can be made arbitrarily simple; and (3) it is often painful, requiring difficult acknowledgments that people naturally resist, whereas fiction can be made emotionally satisfying.
