Humiliation and glory drive Russian foreign policy

Soviet and Russian foreign policy is centrally driven by a thirst for glory and recognition on the international stage—especially Western and American recognition—because that recognition confers a sense of legitimacy; the Soviet collapse represented the loss of that legitimacy and humiliation, and Putin's arrival was an attempt to recover global recognition of Russia's greatness.
