Exposure to brilliant teachers and mentors is more statistically predictive of becoming a first-rate thinker than innate ability, as demonstrated by studies showing whole cohorts of first-rate mathematicians emerged from classes taught by first-rate mathematicians, suggesting that the direction of causation is that exposure to expert thinking teaches expert thinking, not that only pre-existing geniuses seek out great teachers.
