Crushing Czechoslovakia enabled detente with the West
By suppressing Hungary and Czechoslovakia, the Soviets reassured their Eastern European sphere and could then approach the West on a new basis—within four years of the 1968 invasion, Ostpolitik under Willy Brandt and detente under Nixon produced a Soviet-American rapprochement, because the West acknowledged the reality of Soviet control ('love us as we are').
