Functional martial arts share the opponent process
All martial arts that work in any environment—boxing, muay thai, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, sambo—share that they are sports with meritocratic competition and an 'opponent process,' which Thornton calls aliveness (timing, energy, and motion); this opponent process is the key determinant of whether a martial art is functional or fantasy-based.
