The term scuttlebutt originated from sailing ships where water for consumption was stored in a scuttlebutt (a cask with a hole in it), and since sailors exchanged gossip when gathering at the scuttlebutt for water, scuttlebutt became slang for gossip or rumors, similar to modern water cooler talk.
