The Negev NG7 variant, the newest version, fires the 7.62x51mm NATO round, which packs much bigger punch than the original 5.56 round; the IDF sought this upgrade not for added range but to punch through opposing forces body armor, as militants and insurgents have recently acquired level four body armor plates that can stop 5.56 rounds.
