On May 17, 1943, the Royal Air Force conducted Operation Chastise, bombing three main dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley industrial region, destroying the dams and flooding a 40-mile (65 kilometer) stretch of nearby area, resulting in 53 German aircrew deaths and an estimated 1,300 civilian deaths.
