It was the Ukrainians themselves, by fighting back at huge sacrifice, who proved Ukraine is not in Russia's sphere of influence; had Russia overrun Ukraine quickly in 2022 (which nearly happened), the West would have offered only sanctions and 'thoughts and prayers,' so the strong Western reaction was a consequence of Ukrainian resistance rather than its cause.
