Conquistadores Were Minor Nobility's Younger Sons

Contrary to the flattering story Latin Americans tell themselves, the conquistadores were not great lords but the second, third, and fourth sons of minor nobility who had little to inherit; educated and with some means to finance the voyage, they sought to set themselves up as lords in the New World rather than remain marginal in Spain.
