Biological design tools carry dual-use risk

There are over a thousand AI-assisted biological design tools (BDTs) — mostly open-source and academic, generative rather than merely predictive like AlphaFold — and a RAND study of the 57 most powerful found roughly half carry significant dual-use concern, with tools like EVEscape able to predict which viral mutations will evade the immune system.
