Honor norms and values tend to emerge in particular environments—those with limited third-party enforcement and high vulnerability of wealth (as with herders whose animals can be stolen)—where projecting a reputation that one cannot be messed with deters predation; this is why the American South, descended from Scotch-Irish herders, subscribes more to honor culture than the North.
