Centralized vs Dispersed Authority as Research Question

The deep significance of Greek prosperity is that Greece is the major counterexample of a highly dispersed-authority society (hundreds of independent states with no central palace) against the centralized imperial societies of the ancient world; testing whether dispersed authority can perform economically well or is doomed to poverty illuminates how economics works generally.
