Intelligence Is Not Inevitable in Evolution

Intelligence is clearly not important for survival—otherwise roaches would have big brains—and may be a contingent accident rather than an inevitable consequence of evolution; dinosaurs thrived for 300 million years without it, and only the unlucky asteroid that opened an ecological niche allowed mammals to evolve from rodent-like creatures into humans in just 65 million years, meaning one broken evolutionary branch could have prevented intelligence entirely.
