Scots-Irish Shaped American Individualism

The Scots-Irish, a relatively small group of original settlers concentrated in Appalachia, defined much of the American character—fierce individualism, distrust of government and elites, bottom-up governance, and a military tradition—making up 40% of the Revolutionary War army and producing many gangster presidents, and the frontier individualist mindset traces directly to them.
